Assam: Bihu Artist And His Team Allegedly Assaulted In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident in Assam's Guwahati, a group of men allegedly assaulted a Bihu artist and his team who came to perform in a Rongali Bihu event.

The incident took place on Sunday 17 April at a Bihu Sanmilan of Rongali Bihu celebration organized in the Silpukhuri area of Guwahati.

The Bihu artist invited for the event has been identified as Raktupal Diku Bharadwaj.

As per reports, Raktupal and his teammates were allegedly beaten up by the committee members of the Silpukhuri Bihu Committee on asking when they will be allowed to perform.

On Sunday midnight the artiste himself went to the Chandmari Police Station and filed an FIR against the Bihu Committee for allegedly assaulting him and his band.

According to the FIR copy, Raktupal and his band were asked to be present at the event by 11:00 pm but they reached 1 hour prior to the reporting time.

However, they had to wait for a long and at around 12:30 am-midnight the musician of Raktupal's team was called on stage and then some other performers started performing back to back without being informed.

The FIR also reads that a lady was asked to sing with the musicians and the team had no objection but it took one more hour because of which the musicians were already tired before Raktupal was invited onto the stage.

The team manager and a few of the musicians then went to ask the organizers when the team and their artiste will be introduced and when will they start the scheduled program.

Following this, some of the committee members who organized the event started to physically assault the musicians on stage.

Later some of the members in inebriated conditions started to violently attack the musicians and turned the whole situation into a war-like condition. They began beating and chasing every member of the Bihu team.

Raktupal in the FIR stated that he came out on getting informed about the chaos and saw that the musicians were brutally beaten up and their instruments were damaged.

The drunken members also used bamboo and bricks to attack the team including a female artist but they somehow managed to escape from the scene added the artiste in the FIR lodged by him.

Meanwhile, a case is not yet registered as Raktupal claimed that he and his band are making efforts to resolve the matter with the organizers of the event through discussion.
